The Executive Program in Control & Strategy aims to integrate a sound knowledge, experiences, the generation of opportunities, the evaluation of paradigms and business modernity within a management control perspective. Through this program, the student will acquire the necessary knowledge to correctly manage and control a company, establishing financial and economic control mechanisms and through the continuous analysis of the operations.

At the end of the program, the participants will have reinforced their capabilities to lead the management control processes in companies and organisations aimed at their modernisation and efficiency, providing the tools and methodologies necessary to support the processes for the analysis, diagnosis and change with the aim of becoming more competitive, efficient and optimising resources. Furthermore, the participants on the Executive Program in Control & Strategy will be able to obtain the Chartered Controller Analyst (CCA) certificate.

The Executive Program in Control & Strategy has the following objectives:

  • Integrate and address real problems with real solutions.
  • Make financial and operational decisions to create value in the organisation.
  • Go into further detail in the concepts necessary to be able to progress in areas such as strategy, management control, finance, costs, budgets, risk, project management and information systems.
  • Understand the most advanced management control tools and topics in the current environment.
  • Arrive at optimal, comprehensive and realistic decisions based on the information.
  • Lead change within organisations.
  • Improve managerial capabilities and skills. Students satisfactorily completing and passing all the academic requirements of the program (30 ECTS) will receive the qualification in Executive Program in Control & Strategy.

The Executive Program in Control & Strategy is delivered during the academic year from February to December and is part-time (compatible with professional commitments) with classes on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings with the following content structure:

Learning on the CUNEF Executive Programs is based on an eminently practical methodology that considers not only the acquisition of knowledge, but also the development of interpersonal and managerial skills. The main challenges and characteristics of the CUNEF methodology are the following:

  • The training is highly personalised: the work groups are small to encourage a constant exchange of information between the lecturer of each subject and each of the participants. This continual flow of information is one of keys to the success of the executive programs.
  • It develops a strong spirit of cooperation and cohesion among all the participants: all the participants carry out the different educational activities progressing in a synchronised manner, which facilitates the creation and maintenance of a lively group setting and collaborative environment. The lecturers, specialists in their respective fields, actively work to ensure the attainment of the learning objectives established for each topic. They are also responsible for ensuring the creation of a true community between the different participants, encouraging participation and dialogue.
  • An intense planning of the different activities is the main guarantee for correct learning: for each of the subjects, the lecturers plan the different activities for that week in advance.
  • Individual learning and group work: in addition to the individual weekly activities, the participants must also participate in the activities (debates, discussions, forums, mini-projects, small research activities, etc.) that are determining factors for their learning and the creation of a lively setting for the exchange of information and opinions among the different participants.
  • An evaluation system based on effort and dedication: at CUNEF, we promote learning that is based on a continuous assessment of the participant’s performance in the different subjects, measuring the participation and team work, the level of involvement in the forums, the clarity and quality in the explanation and defence of the cases, as well as the knowledge acquired and demonstrated.

During the course of the program, participants will successively work in the following learning methodologies:

  • Classroom-based theoretical explanations, lectures and analysis of technical notes.
  • Team work for the resolution of integrated practical analyses.
  • Classroom-based practical work on cases, problems, jurisprudence and legal documentation.
  • Classroom-based oral presentations of the results of the individual study or work.
  • Simulations of court cases and proceedings, simulations of contract negotiations, judicial visits, etc.
  • Mentoring and professional guidance sessions.
  • Individual study and work, individual lectures and research.
  • Specialised seminars.

During this module, the participants will develop a strategic and management control vision through debate and the application of aspects relating to strategic management and control in general, such as the strategic formulation and decision-making in particular, all from an overall business and company perspective, without forgetting the corporate and functional levels. A global reference framework will be established where decisions can be made, seeking synergies such as their integration between Management Control and Strategies as a requirement to improve the results of the modern organisations of the 21st century. It will establish the main functions of the Controller and their importance in business organisations, as well as look at the evolution of this figure and its functions until reaching the current status. Innovation plays an important role within business organisations. Their importance is evident in the need to develop the professional’s capacity for management control to form part of the innovation processes and lead the change within companies.

The role the Controller plays within financial management, how they analyse and interpret the financial statements, how they define the management tools for the measurement of different indices, and how they improve the performance of the companies will be some of the key points that establish the content of this section. The most common analysis tools in management control will be subject to an in-depth review, as well as how to interpret the information that these provide us.

Budgetary control is one of the most important integrated systems in management control of the economic-financial activity of the company. Budgetary management has become one of the most crucial and vital tools when managing and forecasting the running of the company by Management in business organisations. This module will present a historical summary of the different definitions of what a budget is, how to manage the different stages and the methodology for preparing the budgets, their control and monitoring, and ends with advanced budgetary management. It will also provide the most advanced tools and procedures used in the preparation of budgets, which will allow the participants on the program to associate the budgets with the business and strategy planning development process. There will be a presentation of the different stages that cost accounting has passed through to reach the current management control. Identifying the competitive advantage that having an efficient management control represents for companies as well as defining the role the controller plays in management accounting. Through the analysis of practical examples, we will distinguish between management accounting and financial accounting and go over the basic accounting concepts. Participants will look at the different costs according to their purpose, product valuation costs, in order to make decisions and for the execution of control measures. In this regard, we will analyse aspects relating to the production margin in order to discuss the profitability threshold or break-even point. The greater load of theoretical knowledge of the modules will allow us to comprehend the relevance of costs management, as well as the use of examples that will allow us to understand the theoretical arguments. We will further expand the knowledge of the costs systems, which will allow us to gather the necessary information for decision-making. In order distinguish them, we shall classify them according to the type of costs that we include in the calculation method. We will cover this point in the first section and then in the second analyse the Full Cost and the Direct Cost (variable cost). We will perform an insertion in the evolution of both calculation systems and highlight their differences with the aim of adapting the most suitable calculation system for each organisation. Lastly, in section three we will develop the analysis of the costs using the standard calculation of costs. The creation of a strategic approach by a company represents the need to design more exact scenarios, therefore, this module will work on the design of such scenarios. We shall look more closely as the Activity Based Cost System (ABC), with which we shall be able to analyse all the activities of our organisation and allocate the costs in a less arbitrary manner than using other systems. We shall also develop the Target Costing model as a tool to perform the calculations based on the fixed sale price.

The aim of this module is to go into more detailed concerning the cash management concepts from the perspective of cash that is generated as a result of the business’s activity. In addition to improving the understanding of the internal and external management of the company’s receipts, as well as the management and banking support to do so.

Theoretical-practical workshops aimed at encouraging the development of managerial and executive skills necessary for the professional execution of their duties: Leadership and motivation workshop and negotiation workshop.

The primary objective of Business Intelligence (BI) is to make the most of the immense volume of quantitative data that companies generate and store on a daily basis, by searching for a way to exploit them which will have a positive impact on the company’s profits. Business Intelligence is a powerful tool from a strategic point of view for the company in the achievement of its objectives. The term Corporate Performance Management (CPM) describes the methodologies, processes, metrics and systems for managing the performance of companies. The importance of Big Data, beyond that of the present, generated by the media and in the day to day of some companies will help us understand many of the changes that some organisation have experienced based on the information that they obtain due to the volume, variety and velocity of the data they generate. Big Data allows us to have large volumes of information available in structured and unstructured formats and in real time This module introduces the concepts and fundamentals of Big Data, the challenges it presents, the associated technologies and the most suitable way for companies to tackle Big Data projects. We will also introduce the use of predictive analysis and visualisation techniques aimed at improving business performance.

Information systems have evolved at an exponential rate in recent years, offering a new view, not only in the format but also in the time in which we receive the necessary information to make decisions. Management control has benefited from this, but it has been necessary to be aware of the importance of having knowledge of such systems. In this module, the student will acquire the basic knowledge about Information Systems and how companies, through their use, are able to acquire competitive advantages, rationalise their structures, provide the different areas of the company with the best decision-making capacity and optimise the efficiency of the control in the business units. This module comprises three chapters that will provide the student with the capability to design an efficient control and production system using the IS, as well as many other capabilities. We shall identify and define the appropriate indicators for the control of the business’s performance. A proper visualisation of the data is more often becoming an essential component in Business Intelligence and Business Analytics. The modern tools incorporate advanced graphics, maps and other representations that allow the user to better understand the data the moment they provide alerts and notifications when an indicator exceeds a limit that is above or below the target. This module is mostly practical and focuses on the data visualisation techniques for the effective design of Key Performance Indicators and Dashboards and Scorecards. By the end of the program, the student will be able to confidently and successfully face any professional challenge that may arise in this area.

During this topic, the student will become familiar with the concept of risk and its management. The increased importance of risk management in recent years, its rapid integration into the company at all levels and because companies are increasingly adopting comprehensive risk management models, demonstrates the rising interest and importance that this discipline has acquired in numerous organisations. The Project Management module introduces management control professionals to one of the most powerful tools in promoting change within companies. During this topic, we will review the most important ideas regarding how to be drivers for changes to ensure that the projects we undertake are successful and help achieve the competitive advantage that is so necessary for economic growth and therefore, ensure the survival of the company.

Obtaining a global and integral overview of each of the controller profiles. This final module aims to go into more details into each one, acquiring a cross-sectional vision of the organisation: Economic – Financial; Marketing – Commercial; Digital; Logistics – Procurement; Human Resources.

Theoretical-practical workshops aimed at encouraging the development of managerial and executive skills necessary for the professional execution of their duties: Communication Workshop

Performed individually or as a group, through an in-depth analysis of the specific problem of a company or industrial sector, it addresses the analysis of the performance of a financial product or service, the launch of a new company or business line, etc. It is a rigorous task tutored by a CUNEF lecturer in which the participant must demonstrate their capacities for analysis and conceptualisation and the ability to put ideas, projects or business acquired during the program into action. The project must be associated with the speciality studied by the participants and be defended before a panel.

CUNEF has an excellent faculty, it is one of our most important assets. Expert lecturers who will actively work alongside you during your training so that the effort, learning and conceptual projection of the participants is seen to be clearly reinforced after passing through our classes. They are lecturers who combine their teaching, research and pedagogical vocations with the professional and managerial duties in their respective areas. In the majority of cases, the executive education lecturers at CUNEF hold positions of managerial responsibility at national and international companies and institutions.

All the modules are delivered exclusively by active professionals with teaching experience. Specialists from the financial, transport, communication, human resources or consultancy sectors will deliver the different sessions, with the necessary rigour, under the coordination and supervision of the program directors, comprising data scientists with at least 10 years professional experience and CUNEF lecturers.

Prof. Dr. Javier Sosa. Graduate in Economics and Business Science (summa cum laude) from the Complutense University of Madrid. PhD in Economics and Business Science (summa cum laude) from the Complutense University of Madrid. Graduate in Law from the UNED (National University of Distance Education). Full professor of Financial Economics and Accounting (Complutense University of Madrid) on leave of absence. Expert in Accounting (Spanish Institute of Chartered Accountants), Auditor registered with the ROAC [Official Registry of Accounting Auditors] (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness). Partner of the auditing firm since 2007. Director of the CUNEF-PwC Master’s in auditing.

Prof. Antonio San Frutos Graduate in Economics and Business Science from the Complutense University of Madrid. Specialist in accounting and auditing. With extensive teaching (university and non-university) and professional experience, specialising in accounting and tax consultancy for companies and the preparation of expert reports in accounting, taxation and the valuation of companies.  He is currently and Economist at Belarrit y Asociados, Abogados y Asesores Fiscales, S. L. and a lecturer of the Financial and Administration and Accounting faculty of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a lecturer on CUNEF postgraduate courses.

Prof. Javier Sánchez. Graduate in Mathematical Sciences. Specialising in Computation, Analysis and Statistics. Master’s in Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), Master Instructor. He has taught classes in the IT and Mathematics field for more than 25 years. He currently teaches classes in the field of quantitative methods at CUNEF. He is the Director of Information and Communications Technologies at CUNEF with experience in CRM and ERP, learning platforms and Learning Management Systems (LMS). He also has extensive experience in the implementation, monitoring, verification and accreditation of Quality Assurance systems within the educational sector. He has been the Director of IT in companies within the service sector, performing an intense professional activity heading up projects for the wide range of clients.

Prof. Dr. Juan Domínguez Jiménez. PhD in Finance and Accounting. He has previous teaching experience as an associate lecturer in Finance and Accounting as the IE Business School, associate lecturer as several Spanish Business Schools and Universities and as a visiting lecturer in Finance as the NEOMA Business School (Paris, France). He has extensive professional experience spanning 20 years in financial positions and in managing business lines. Some of the positions he has held are: Head of Carrier Services at Vodafone, Director of the Wholesale and Interconnection Business at ONO, Director of Management Control (Residential Business) at ONO, Director of TV Operations at ONO, General Manager at Estreno Digital (AUNA Group), Director of Finance at Estreno Digital (AUNA Group), Controller at Uno-e Bank (BBVA Group) and Head of Management Control and Treasury at Hewlett-Packard.

Prof. Dr. Ricardo Queralt Sánchez de las Matas. Dr. Queralt is the co-director of the Master’s in Data Science for Finance at CUNEF. He has a PhD in Quantitative Economics and has taught quantitative methods since 1990. He has taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Francisco de Vitoria University and at the European University of Madrid. He currently teaches graduate and postgraduate courses at the University College of Financial Studies (CUNEF). He also co-directs the Summer School course Introduction to Data Science and its Applications in Business and Finance. He is also the director of the Doctorate department at the European University of Madrid for the programs in Spain and Latin America.  His professional career outside of teaching and research has always focused on the application of quantitative methods in business, excelling in the creation of econometric and forecasting models in the areas of finance, health and sport. His professional prestige has led to him being appointed as a member of the Investor Protection and Intermediaries Standing Committee of ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority).

Prof. Dr. Juan Manuel López Zafra. Graduate in Economics and Business Science from CUNEF, has a PhD in Economic Sciences and is a licensed actuary of the Institute of Actuaries of Madrid. He has been full professor of Statistics and Operations Research at the UCM. He has also been a lecturer at CEU San Pablo, the Pontifical University of Salamanca and ICADE, as well as a visiting professor of the University of California, Berkeley. He is the current co-director of the Master’s program in Data Science for Finance at CUNEF and Chief Data Officer of this institution. He is also the founding member of the Statpro 2000 Clima SL consultancy that provides both information and analysis services, and Big Data.

Prof. Eva Mediavilla. Graduate in Business Administration and Management from the University College of Financial Studies (CUNEF). Master’s in Treasury Management and Master’s in the Management of Financial Derivatives from the Comillas Pontifical University (ICADE). More than 20 years’ experience in the Calvo Group financial department. Director of Treasury of the Group since 2004 where she has developed and implemented an innovative Cash Management system, a model that has been subsequently implemented in other companies in the sector.

Prof. Patricia Enríquez. Graduate in Business and Administration Management from ICADE and has a Certificate in HR Management from the Wharton Business School. She began her professional career at Accenture, and after 14 years in consultancy, she specialised in strategy and change management. She has carried out the Admission Management for several executive programs such as the Executive MBA at the Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania) and the IE Brown Executive MBA (IE Business School). At CUNEF she has worked in the In Company department as head of Business Development and as programs coordinator. She is currently a member of the CUNEF Management Committee and Director of International Relations and Accreditations.

Prof. Yolanda López Blanco. Graduate in Forestry from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Diploma in Cooperative Studies from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Complex Project Management Program at EASDE, Barcelona. Program for Management Development (PMD) at IESE School in Madrid. She has worked as a consultant at Accenture, and is currently the lecturer in Managerial Skills at CUNEF on the graduate and postgraduate programs.

Prof. José Cabrera. Graduated in Business Science at the Complutense University of Madrid, Diploma in Employment Relations from the Rey Juan Carlos University and Executive MBA from the IE Business School. He is a Chartered Controller Analyst and a member of the Global Chartered Controller Institute Academic Council. He began his professional career in the accounting department of PROGRESA, a publishing house of the Prisa Group, and at a subsidiary of the Warner Bros Group in Spain where he held several positions within the financial area and took over the management of the financial departments and management control. In 2006, he joined the VIPS Group (Starbucks, Ginos, VIPS, etc.) as the Controller of Corporate Management, and since 2010 has been responsible for the Management Control of the Group.

Prof. Jorge Fernández. Graduated in Economics at the University College of Cork (Ireland) and in Applied Accounting at the Oxford Brookes University (United Kingdom). Member of the exclusive “Dean’s List” of his class. MBA from INSEAD. He has been a consultant at McKinsey & Company and Deloitte, and Head of Investments at the European Investment Bank. He worked at ABANCA as Director of Commercial Transformation. An entrepreneur in Africa, he founded a microfinance bank, a coin production company and a foundation for education and agricultural development. He is the current Director of Business Transformation at GALP Spain and sits on the Management Committee. He is a Chartered Controller Analyst and a member of the Global Chartered Controller Institute Academic Council.

Prof. José Manuel Castellano. Graduate in Business Science from CUNEF, Diploma of Advanced Studies in Financial Economics and PMD from IESE School in Madrid. A large part of his professional career was spent at the BBVA Group where he has held the position of Director in the areas of Corporate Innovation, Corporate Banking, Stock Exchange Analysis and Valuation and Investor Relations. He is the current chairman of the Chapter of Company Appraisal Analysts of the Spanish Institute of Financial Analysts (IEAF) and Managing Partner for Spain of the North American consultancy firm Think Creative, specialising in innovation and valuation of new business models. Frequently collaborates at different business schools and universities in the areas of financial content and business valuations as well and innovation methodologies.

Prof. María Jesús Carrato. Graduated in Economics and Business Science at CUNEF, International MBA in Business Management from ESDEN, and a specialisation course in Treasury and Cash Management at the IE Business School. She has worked as a Financial Controller at EL CORTE INGLES, Head of treasury at the insurer CASER, Director of Treasury at UNIDAD EDITORIAL (the “El Mundo” newspaper), and as the Global Head of Treasury and Risk Management at MEDIA PLANNING GROUP, S.A (HAVAS). She is the current CFO at the SM Editorial Group and member of the Academic Council at the Global Chartered Controller Institute.

Prof. Gumer Alberola. Graduated in Economics and Business Science and MBA at the IE Business School. Certified European Financial Analyst (CEFA), certification granted by the European Federation of Financial Analysts (EFFA). He is an associated member of the Spanish Institute of Financial Analysts (IEAF) and a lecturer for the EFPA and CCA professional certifications. He has extensive professional and teaching experience. He has been a manager at Deloitte, and is the current Director of Madrid Business Consultants, a specialist consultant in strategic international advisory services and a manager for the consultancy firm Think Creative.

Prof. Antonio Andrés Lencina. He has studied at the University of Alicante (UA), University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in the United States. He has worked in BBVA and Tempe Grupo Inditex in Management Control in the provisioning and distribution area. He has a solid background in management control in provisioning and distribution. He is the current CEO of Whyconsultors and Seven Sunglasses.

Prof. Benigno Prieto. Graduate in Economics and Business Science from the Comillas Pontifical University. He began his professional career in auditing at Arthur Andersen for the financial entities sector and has also worked as the Head of Business Modelling for the ENCE Group. He has extensive experience at different Big 4 firms in consultancy relating to the design and implementation of Control Management integrated models in multinational companies, in areas such as planning and budgeting, cost analysis, investment management and financial and operational reporting. He is currently Partner at Management Consulting and leading the Control Management at KPMG.

CUNEF maintains a very close and active relationship with the business and professional environment. The Careers Service actively manages the company work experience programs, job offers, as well as the organisation of complementary seminars and activities, the main aim of which is to provide CUNEF students with all the necessary tools and skills, and also the best possible opportunities, to facilitate their incorporation into their first job and improve their professional development.

CUNEF students have the option to participate in some of the following professional training activities:

  • CUNEF jobs forum Every year, companies and institutions from different economic and business sectors participate in the jobs forum organised by CUNEF. It provides students and companies the perfect framework for exchanging experiences and discovering the details of all the processes involved in young university graduates starting their first jobs.
  • Company presentations and on-campus selection processes.
  • Companies from the legal, financial, consultancy, auditing and investment banking sectors frequently carry out election processes, presentations, specific seminars, etc., all developed in conjunction with the Careers Service and specially aimed at CUNEF graduates and postgraduates.
  • Practical Seminars and Activities for professional purposes. Participants will also be able to participate in a variety of seminars and workshops aimed at improving their specialised knowledge and competences for their professional life
  • Job Bank. Together with the CUNEF Alumni Association, CUNEF manages the offers of employment that are regularly issued by companies and institutions.

[1] Las prácticas profesionales (600 horas como mínimo) se realizan, preferentemente, en empresas o instituciones con las que se haya firmado el correspondiente convenio de cooperación educativa. Para su realización CUNEF dispone de una amplia relación de convenios de cooperación educativa con instituciones, despachos, entidades y empresas de diferentes sectores industriales. En todo caso, dónde se realizan las prácticas depende de los convenios que se encuentran vigentes en cada momento, así como de las convocatorias realizadas por las empresas e instituciones colaboradoras. Así como de los criterios establecidos en los procesos de selección por cada despacho, empresa, o institución en cada momento. CUNEF no decide quién y a dónde, sino que son los despachos, empresas o instituciones los que lo hacen. Por tanto, la responsabilidad de la consecución de la empresa o institución en la que los alumnos realizan las prácticas recae en ellos. Eso sí con el apoyo y asesoramiento activo de CUNEF. Eventualmente, los alumnos podrán solicitar la convalidación de la asignatura de prácticas en el caso de acreditar experiencia profesional, o prácticas profesionales, realizadas previamente.

During the year of the Master’s, the day to day teaching activities are complemented with another series of activities so that the participants expand their knowledge, reinforce their professional direction, experiment in the professional environment or, gauge initiatives and proposals developed by the leading experts in the professional world of finance. The Program also includes the following complementary activities:

  • The “Passport to your future” Professional Guidance Program. a program where consultants with extensive experience in selection processes, accompany and help participants on the Master’s in finance programs strengthen their professional performance. The program includes three types of activities:
